Many Europeans and Americans dance tango differently from the Argentinians. For years I tried to find a video to show how the tango is danced in Buenos Aires in order to change people’s perceptions. But I couldn’t find a gratifying one because tango video clips are mostly shot by people interested only in their version of tango. Some that reflect the truth are badly made and with irritating nonsense often. Perhaps even in Buenos Aires most milongas aren’t to the typical up, since foreigners are always heavily involved, rendering it difficult to capture a portion milonga truly.
Only I just found this video produced by Paul Holman, which I find is representative of a milonga that I could call home. This video is cherished by me not only because of its clearness lighting, cinematography, and color, but also because of the producer’s unique perspective. In Europe and North America, people have a different perception of tango quite.
Here is the way they dance tango in a common Euro-American milonga. They dance tango never to benefit from the embrace, but to practice steps or show footwork. I really believe people understand tango can be a close and soulful dance. The majority of us even yearn to taste that apple, which is why we dance tango. But also for some reasons, we just don’t feel safe enough to be personal with one another, so we shy away from the embrace, keep a bashful distance from our partner, and focus on the steps instead.
To be reasonable, this is not the worst case. You can tell it’s a growing tango community. A genuine number of dancers dance in the milonguero style, some of whom are fair to good dancers. But the majority are still novices who focus on the steps rather than the feelings and connection. Their musicality is very bad. They don’t learn how to embrace, so they rely on the arms and hands to lead and follow.

Many are practicing what they lately learned. Some come and then socialize than dance rather. Most are emotionally detached. The milonga codes are complied, as attested by the verbal invitation, blocking the traffic, remaining on the dance floor through the coating, wearing ornaments that could rub the partner’s body, loud background noises, and a complete lot of speaking. The music, although traditional, is not so engaging, and the complete scene is quite chaotic.
Towards the finish there are a few better dances. But overall, I don’t find this milonga terribly attractive and satisfying. Unfortunately, this is an average tango picture in North and Europe America. Common amongst our teenagers is a different type of tango scene showing below. Young people appear to need to discharge their youthful energy and also to prove their ability of doing things unconventional. Dance in open hands keeps than accept rather, they can do extravagant steps and showy statistics.
Some even attained a certain degree of skillfulness in what they are doing. Nevertheless, there is absolutely no fundamental difference between this kind of tango and other sport dances. Personally I don’t see how such a way of dance tango is even pleasant compared to the feeling-oriented milonguero style. I wish there were better explanations why some people insist on accomplishing this when there’s obviously a better way, other than they have to release energy, showcase, have road blocks, or have no idea better.
